Sports Quote of the Week
“Champions don’t show up to get everything they want; they show up to give everything they have.” – Alexander den Heijer
This quote captures the heart of what we call “Medowie Ball.” Success is not simply measured by the scoreboard, but by the effort, character and teamwork shown every time our students step onto the field or court. Playing Medowie Ball means competing with determination, giving everything we have for one another, while also showing fairness, humility and outstanding sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.
As gala day season kicks off, we are excited to see our students represent the school community with pride and enthusiasm. We look forward to our teams continuing to play good “Medowie Ball” — competing hard, supporting one another and showing the respect and sportsmanship that make our students outstanding representatives of the school.
HRIS Open Boys Football & Open Girls Netball
Last Friday saw our Open Boys Football team and Open Girls Netball team compete in their respective HRIS gala days. It was an exciting day for MCS with our first Open Boys team since 2019 competing. They had a really tough draw, facing off against 3 quarter final teams in the pool stage. The boys secured a gritty 3-2 win and a 0-0 draw to go along with 2 close losses. The boys played hard all day and represented themselves and the school really well. A big, special thank you needs to go to the Medowie Football Club, who lent the school a set of jerseys to play in for the gala day.

Despite facing a number of early injuries on the day, the netball team showed tremendous resilience and determination to continue competing with energy and positivity. With each game, the team grew in confidence, communication and cohesion, playing some increasingly quality netball against strong opposition. Their persistence and teamwork were rewarded in the final match of the day, where they finished with an impressive win that was a fitting reflection of their effort and improvement across the gala day.

MCS Shines at Newcastle Futsal Tournament
On Monday 11th May, MCS sent six talented teams (50 players) to compete in the NNSW Newcastle Schools Primary Futsal Tournament. The tournament had high quality teams and was made more challenging by 3 different playing surfaces. Our students demonstrated determination, resilience and focus to adjust with the different fields and varying referee expectations. The true highlight was the character of our athletes. The way our players conducted themselves, playing with a spirit of tough but fair competition, glorified God and brought immense pride to our school community.
Our Under 8 Mixed #2, Under 10 Boys and Under 12 Girls teams battled hard through a very compacted schedule with little rest between matches, fighting hard in every game. Our Under 12 Boys & Under 10 Girls narrowly missed out on Grand Final appearances based only on goal difference.
Our Under 8 Mixed Team #1 claimed a Grand Final victory! In a thrilling turnaround, they defeated an opponent who had just beaten them 3-1 in the game before, clinching victory with a classy 3-2 win. They have now qualified for the NNSW Champion of Champions tournament on the Central Coast.
Days like this are a true example of our amazing whole school community. Thank you to Mr Wenham and Mrs Urra for coaching and helping to train the teams. Thank you Mr Pullen for helping select and coach the teams. Thank you Mrs Baker for helping students with injuries and giving love and encouragement through the victories and defeats. Thank you Mr Urra for helping coach the Under 8s at the tournament. Thank you Mr Allen for your daily encouragement in running Stage 1 soccer at break times. Finally, thank you to all the parents who supported our teams and never stopped cheering.

MCS Takes on the Scone Horse Sports Day
Last Friday, 8th May, I had the pleasure of traveling with ten of our MCS Equestrian Team riders to Scone for the Scone Grammar School and Pony Club Interschools Sports Horse Competition. With 134 riders at the event, MCS was one of the largest and most spirited groups there. The dedication of our team was evident from the start; most families traveled out the day before, camping in their floats through freezing overnight temperatures to be ready for the 7:30am gear checks.
It was a demanding but rewarding day in the saddle. Our riders and their trusted steeds competed in a full program, beginning with morning Horse and Rider classes where some also took on Dressage and Utility tests before moving into the high-energy afternoon sporting events like barrel races, keyhole, and western bending. While many ribbons were won, there were some truly special individual milestones to celebrate: Shea was named the 13-Year-Old Boy Age Champion, Sophie won her very first riding class, Amber placed 4th in her Dressage test, and Carmen successfully navigated her first-ever competition and trip away.
These students spend countless hours training and preparing, and their hard work was matched only by their incredible sportsmanship. They remained encouraging and positive all day, making it a true joy to stand alongside them. On behalf of our coaches, Emma and Matt Broome, and myself, I want to say a huge well done to the entire team for representing MCS so valiantly.
