From the Classroom
This week MCS was fortunate enough to welcome Matthew Gray as part of the Olympics Unleashed program to speak with Year 9. Matthew is a 3-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in archery. He spoke with the students encouraging them to unleash their passion.
Matthew shared his journey to representing Australia at the Olympics and unpacked how goal setting is a key process to achieving success and that all plans require reflection and resilience in order to succeed.
He also brought in jackets from each of the games he represented Australia in and also brought along his gold medal from the 2010 Commonwealth Games!!

“How you do anything, is how you do everything”
There is a reason why we have these old sayings like “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, “all that is old, is new again” and “many hands make light work”. The above saying is not quite as well known but nevertheless as true as those mentioned. "How we do anything, is how we do everything" refers to the attitude and approach we show up with in work, in our family, social settings, in whatever context really that demonstrates our character and values.
We all have our coping strategies and patterns of thinking when we are presented with a new opportunity or challenge. Sometimes we are closed off to the possibility of change and other times we are excited by it. Sometimes we are apprehensive because of what we think might happen while at others we throw caution to the wind and go with the flow.
It is our mindset that guides us, that we carry with us and often share with those closest to us. At times this can be positive and enhance situations and circumstances and at others, well if given a second chance we might have liked to keep our thoughts to ourselves.
This week in Secondary we have seen how amazing the mindsets of our young men and women truly are both at school and away from home. Our Secondary students have stepped up and welcomed our Japanese exchange students into our community at school and our Seniors have excelled on the slopes at Blue Cow & Perisher. Their attitude, mindsets and approach has demonstrated that these are indeed impressive young men and women who, when given the opportunity, will rise to the occasion, move out of their comfort zones and really excel in a variety of contexts.

Great Growth for MCS
Next week we are set to see over 50 incoming Year 7 students to MCS for our Orientation Day. This is a wonderful opportunity to welcome our existing and incoming Year 7 students and families to learn a little more about Secondary School at Medowie. It is also exciting that this Year 7 group will be the largest group we have had in the Secondary School to date and we are very much looking forward to the privilege of getting alongside these learners on their educational journey.
The morning seeks to engage our students in some general abilities assessment and a little fun as they get to know one another and some of the Secondary staff. Our parents are able to hear a little more about Secondary School at Medowie, our approach, meet some more of our team and ask any questions they may have about what learning and care look like in Secondary.
We are looking forward to connecting with you on Thursday 31st August from 9:00am - 11:00am. Morning tea will be provided for both students and families to enjoy together.
Great Question???
I know for many of us we desire to connect with our children and to continue to get to know them as they grow and mature. I also know that as a society we continue to get busier and busier and at times our good intentions to make time for one another, or even know what’s the best/most welcomed way to communicate with one another can seem like a bridge too far. If you’re looking for some conversation starters around the dinner table or during the drive to afternoon/weekend activities you may like to scan this list of 10 Questions to ask your child about school, to continue to foster and develop these precious relationships!
