T2, Week 9
Why Camp?
This week, we had the pleasure of taking our Junior Secondary Students to Teen Ranch for a 3-day camp to explore, connect, face challenges and share faith.
It’s easy to see camp as just a fun break from classes, not necessarily connected to learning in the usual sense within the classroom. However, camp is a unique opportunity designed to help your teenager grow in other ways that can help them thrive when back at school.
Camps provide our teenagers with:
A Much-Needed Break from the "Urgency" of the World
Our children are growing up in a world that is telling them to “Hurry up!” and “Be perfect!” Between notifications, teenage pressures and social media, their brains rarely get a rest.
Camp forces a hard pause on this frantic pace. By leaving the phones behind, your teen gets a chance to unplug, a reminder to unwind and reconnect with God’s creation.
Real Community and Lifelong Memories
At school, it’s easy for teens to stick to their comfortable friendship circles or hide behind a curated image. Camp changes the conversations they have and who they have them with.
The Power of Shared Laughter: There is something incredibly bonding when we laugh together, when songs are sung, and meals are shared.
Building "Grit" by Facing Challenges
At times, our instinct is to protect our teenagers from discomfort. Yet we also know that growth only happens when we step outside our comfort zones.
Whether it’s tackling a high ropes course, riding a horse, or just managing the anxiety of being away from home, camp introduces healthy and safe challenges.
When your teenagers face moments when they want to quit but push through anyway, they build grit. They realise they are stronger than they thought. This mirrors the Biblical truth that trials produce perseverance, and perseverance builds character. They return home with a bigger reservoir of resilience for the next challenge they take on.
Cultivating Gratitude
It is amazing how, after a few days away from modern luxuries, technology, family members, and pets, a teenager’s perspective can be reset towards gratitude.
By helping our teenagers strengthen their resolve, we are giving them a safe space to grow, build resilient character, and discover who God has created them to be.
