HRIS Primary Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the HRIS Primary Public Speaking competition yesterday. These students have worked hard in our Public Speaking Club to develop and refine their confidence and public speaking skills. The competition from other schools was strong but we are excited to announce that Lyla took out second place in the Year 3 Prepared Speech category. A big thank you goes to Mrs Ratcliffe for all the work that she did to prepare our students for the competition and to Dr Bignill for supporting them on the day.

Celebrating Primary STEM Learning
This week we celebrate the wonderful world of STEM at MCS. Many of you will be aware that STEM literally stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics however we believe it is so much more! Here at MCS, STEM is also about developing our thinking, our problem solving strategies and our skillsets to allow us to interact effectively with the world that now surrounds us and furthermore, to navigate the inevitable changes that students will experience across their lives.
A key part of this is understanding the importance of tools and the need to use these with discernment and understanding. Whether we are talking about a hammer or the latest digital device, these are only effective when they are used in a manner that aligns with their purpose.
This term our younger students have begun developing the foundational understanding of how to use their digital devices effectively and responsibly. They have explored the difference between hardware and software and how these interact to provide us with tools that can help advance our learning. Our Year 3 students have been working through the Design Thinking Framework (Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) to solve problems and refine their plans and products. Year 4 and 5 have dived into the world of Computer Programming while our Year 6’s have been exploring how these computer programming skills transfer into the physical world through the use of Lego EV3 kits and Spheros.

Blowing in the Wind - Windy Bike Club Days
At MCS we follow the safety guidelines and recommendations are provided by Cycling Australia. Cycling Australia identifies strong winds, wind gusts and crosswinds as significant safety concerns for cyclists. Wind gusts, which are short accelerations of wind lasting between 10–30 seconds. In accordance with these guidelines, MCS may cancel Bike Club when forecast wind speeds are expected to exceed 40 km/h. While we understand that students look forward to Bike Club, safety must always take precedence. Our main concern is falling branches. This is just one example of the result of last week's windy days. We have had a great term of Bike Club and it is time for our staff and students to take a rest. There will be no Bike Club in Week 10 giving our families the opportunity to collect their child’s bike and do some maintenance on it over the school holidays. Bike Club will return in Term 3, Week 2.
