During Week 6 our Primary students have been focusing on how we build a Culture of Peace, where everyone is included and cared for. Most of the social challenges that our students experience are rooted in them not understanding conflict and how to respond to it. We have found that explicit teaching about conflict, and how to resolve it and grow as a person, empowers our students and helps them build strong relationships for the rest of their lives.

To teach our students strategies to help them view conflict as an opportunity to grow as a person and work towards peace, rather than try to escape conflict or attack as a result of conflict, we are using the Peace Wise Program. This Program is being taught in Stage 2 and 3.
Through this Program, our students are being taught:
the Slippery Slope of Conflict and how to keep moving toward peace using strategies that help them achieve peace,
the Paws Process, because pausing is an important part of how we respond to conflict in a healthy way,
the 5A’s of Apology that are important for them to follow when apologising to others, and
the Four Choices of Forgiving.
The foundational principles of the program are also taught to, and followed by, staff as they work with students who are experiencing challenges in their relationships.
It is our desire to see our students resilient and equipped to manage conflict in their lives both now and as they emerge as adults. We believe that this Program will help them greatly to develop positive relationships and manage conflict for the rest of their lives. I encourage parents to discuss these ideas with their children in order to gain an understanding of the guidance that they are receiving around social issues at school.
I look forward to seeing the growth in our students throughout the year as we all endeavour to live out the principles of the Peace Wise Program and grow together as a community that looks out for each other and values strong positive relationships.
