T4, Week 6

Sports and Exercise Science Elective

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education are important components of every child’s learning at Medowie Christian School. One of the various electives that our students may choose, during Years 9 and 10 to expand this knowledge in these areas, is a subject called Sports and Exercise Science. This has been a very popular choice during 2023 with twenty-six students enrolled for this subject.

During the year students have had the opportunity to examine the qualities of effective coaching, gain a greater understanding of how to develop and structure a training session, look at the complexities around organising large sporting events, sporting injury prevention and rehabilitation as well as human anatomy and physiology. Included in this process has been a number of practical components such as conducting a coaching session, facilitating activities at our Infants Swimming Carnival, attending a local gym and assessing their physical progress, and participating in a range of circuit training classes. Recently, they have been taught how to ‘strap’ injured limbs by a fully trained physiotherapist.

On behalf of the MCS community, we’d like to thank James and Perry from Atune Health Centres at Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for being so willing to share their staff, their time and their professional insight for the educational benefit of our students’ learning, and Andrew and Milly at Active Fitness Medowie for providing such a high quality experience for our Sports and Exercise Science students. It has been a thoroughly productive and enjoyable year for all of our students, and once we’ve had a break, we can’t wait to provide these opportunities during 2024.
