CIS Athletics Championships

Congratulations to all of our athletes who were successful in being selected to attend the CIS Athletics Championships on Tuesday 19th September at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in Homebush. I am delighted to report that Asher (Year 5), who is a short to medium distance runner, came first in Long Jump with a 4.14m. This is a personal best for Asher, an incredible achievement when competing against some of the best athletes from across the state, and will attend PSSA in October.

Also, Monica (Year 12), who was the only athlete to compete across every event in her class, achieved Gold in the 800 metres, Silver for 200 and 100 metres, and a Bronze for long jump, shot put and long jump.

I would like to thank all of our competitors for turning up and giving all you had. You have used the sporting skills and talents God has given you, and you’ve given your school community a lot to celebrate. Thank you!

Staff vs. Year 12 Volleyball Championship

On Tuesday, Year 12 took on the MCS Staff in our annual ‘Year 12 Staff vs Students Sporting Challenge’. This is an extremely important event on our sporting calendar which both teams will do almost anything to win, particularly considering the trophy the winning team is awarded (See photo below).

The volleyball game began in the school’s MPC, surrounded by an immeasurable amount of hard-core fans to witness the outgoing Year 12 bedazzle the Staff with a solid lead early in the first game. The Staff, shaken but not stirred, got their kit together and clawed their way back to secure a victory over the mighty Year 12’s. Even though the level of skill amongst the staff is extremely high, this still came as a shock loss for our student team and for their adoring fans.

This event takes place each year, is lots of fun and an opportunity to reflect on the wonderful relationships that have been built over the years between students and their teachers. It also means that the Staff Team, victorious yet again, get to choose the game that is played next year against our current Year 11’s, when they are in Year 12. Look out Year 12 of 2024, we are in great form!

We want to thank our ‘Super Six’, as they have become affectionately known, for turning up, playing hard and being great sports. You will be greatly missed and we’ll be praying for you as you prepare for your exams, and you consider your future goals. Blessings from all of us!

Spotlight: MCS Student Athlete - Callum

ree

Many of our students participate in sports outside of the school that Medowie Christian School believes deserve recognition.

This week, we are privileged to be able to share some of the outstanding achievements from one of our Year 9 students, Callum.

Last Sunday, Callum competed in the Australian Martial Arts Competition (AMAC) NSW State Titles in the discipline of kickboxing. Despite the sweltering heat in the stadium, and a thumb injury suffered early in the day, Callum competed in 11 fights and won 8 of them, over an 8 hour period across four events.

Callum achieved:

  • 1st place overall

  • 2 x 2nd places

  • 1 x 3rd place

As a result, Callum is now the two time State Champion (2022 and 2023). This is a mammoth effort for a student that excels in his academic responsibilities at school as well! Callum is now State Champion for the second year in a row. As many of you might be aware, supporting our children at these levels takes an enormous commitment from their family. Congratulations to Callum’s parents as well for supporting him throughout these sporting endeavours.

MCS Hats during Term 4

As was communicated in last week’s newsletter, wearing a hat when involved in outdoor activities is, and has always been, an important element to protecting ourselves from the damaging ultraviolet light that causes sunburn and irreversible damage to our skin. Please continue to encourage your child to make sure they have their hat ready for Term 4.

Uniforms can be ordered online, which can be accessed via the school’s website under the ‘Parent Hub’ and the ‘Uniform Shop’ at the bottom of the page. Here is the link for your convenience:

Introducing the MCS Team for Inter-Schools Horse Extravaganza 2023 - Tamworth

In Week 1 of Term 4, the MCS Equestrian Team will attend the biggest inter-school equestrian competition in Australia. There are over 740 horses entered for this 4 day event and it includes the different disciplines of: dressage, show jumping, one day eventing, combined training, show riding, working horse challenge, camp drafting and sporting. Although our whole team will not be attending and we will miss those who aren’t with us, I am thrilled to introduce the team competing this year. We pray God’s blessings over each of the girls and their trusted steeds as they continue preparing and training for the Inter-schools at Tamworth. We also welcome Mrs Patton back from her long service leave next term.

Olivia

Meet Ellie and ‘Tocal Tommy’. They have been working together for nine months now. Tommy is still a baby and has a lot to learn at only 3 years old. Ellie and Tommy are competing in dressage classes, working horse and show horse at Tamworth. Ellie and Tommy have already been successful in the show ring and have won many ribbons and also a champion rug. They are competing in the State Australian Stock Horse Show the weekend before ISHE in Sydney. Ellie is looking forward to stepping outside of her comfort zone and giving Tommy a positive experience amongst the 800 horses entered at ISHE this year.

Meet Olivia and ‘Quelline’ aka Queenie. Liv and Queenie have only been working together consistently for around 6 weeks. We are competing in Hack, Show Jumping and Sporting classes at ISHE.

I am mostly looking forward to experiencing more events and getting more exposure for both myself and my horse. Queenie is an 11 yr old thoroughbred that is still very green and will need more outings to help her resettle outside of the racing environment.

Lydia

Amber

ree

Meet Lydia and ‘Star’. Star is a very energetic and playful horse, although she is still young and can be a bit headstrong sometimes. At ISHE, on Friday we are competing in the 1 Day Event (which includes a dressage test, show jumping and cross country). On Saturday, I am competing in show jumping. At ISHE, I am most looking forward to spending time with our equestrian team and it will be a good learning experience for Star and I.

ree

Meet Amber, ‘Danny’ and ‘Coco’. Amber is looking forward to going to Tamworth and having fun riding and spending time with her friends. I am competing in the combined training which is show jumping and dressage on Friday and dressage on Saturday. I am doing both of these on both of my horses Coco and Danny. One achievement I have is getting over my fear after breaking my ankle and getting back into riding. A memory I have is of last year riding at the interschools comp in the middle of an east coast low, torrential rain. Coco is a very energetic and nervous horse and this will be her first big competition. Danny has been pretty much everywhere and is constantly trying to find food, even during dressage tests.

Indira

Annika

ree

Meet ‘Habafield Anastasia’ and Indira. For ISHE, Indira is looking forward to spending time with friends and family and competing with her very special horse, Annie. “At ISHE I will be competing on Annie in the two dressage tests on Saturday. My favourite memories when riding Annie is going trail riding through the bush and over water crossings with

my sister. I also love competing with Annie at dressage comps. Annie is a very cheeky horse with the most beautiful temperament.”

ree

Meet ‘Don Darci’ and Annika. At ISHE, I am really looking forward to competing with Darci and creating more special and fun memories with him and my family. I am competing in the two dressage tests on Saturday at ISHE. I would have to say that my favourite memory and one of my biggest achievements with Darci is competing at SIEC with him, alongside my supportive family. I also love doing liberty training with him in my free time. Darci is a big friendly giant who is very soft natured and has a big heart.

Elouise

ree

Meet Elouise and 'Sisco'. I'm representing MCS at Interschools Horse Extravaganza in preliminary dressage and 50cm eventing. I'm looking forward to the cross country part of the evening. A special achievement that I've experienced is when I received a rosette for 2nd place at state interschools for combined training. Receiving the email that I am a part of the NSW team for national interschools was even better. One unique thing about Sisco is that she likes spicy Mi Goreng 2min noodles and zooper doopers. A funny story that happened at ISHE last year was while I was warming up to do the jump round. I was soooo scared that I was crying and saying "I don't want to do this". My mum said "stop thinking about dressage... and just let Sisco's head out and get over those jumps!!!". I was holding my breath and nearly fainted at the end. Now looking back it's hilarious. I ended up being Primary Champion for Combined Training.

Ms D Pietsch and Mrs Kathy Patton
