Agile Learners

This week I had the opportunity to meet with our Senior Students in Years 10 - 12 and get them thinking a little about their mindset and approach to learning, to challenges and themselves as young men and women.

Often when students hear the words ‘Growth Mindset’ they feel that the presenter is going to tell them how bad a fixed mindset is and how good a growth mindset is. They may be feeling or hearing that their mindset is wrong and needs to change in order for them to succeed.

Well, here at MCS this is not the case and research around mindset and learning suggests that we are neither totally fixed nor totally growth oriented in our approach to learning all the time. Actually there is a continuum between fixed and growth, a grey area if you will, where many of us reside. I appreciate this quote from educational researcher James Andreson who says, all a growth mindset is, is an invitation to grow, it is not the growth itself”. This is what our teaching team can afford your children, an invitation to grow, an opportunity to get better, to receive great quality instruction and as a result of persistence, practice and effort, actually achieve growth. I provided the below attachment on the Mindset Continuum to our Senior Community and asked them to reflect on where they could see themselves in each of these categories. I hope that in your own family, you might reflect on this with your children and continue the conversation at home.

We all have opportunities to grow, to change and improve regardless of our age and stage and I firmly believe that God has designed us this way. The more we learn about Him the more we understand the world around us, one another and ourselves. Orientation Day!

It was wonderful to meet with our new Year 7 families this week at our Orientation Day. Our families were able to meet more of the MCS team to hear from staff and students about Secondary School whilst our new Year 7 learning community completed a general abilities assessment known as the AGAT, as well as getting to know one another ahead of the new year together. It was such a blessing to welcome these families and young men and women into our community and I am really looking forward to the new year with them all!

Thank you to our families for taking the time to invest with us as we seek to set up your children for success in the years ahead.

Chess at MCS

This year our Senior Chess Team have had their most successful year in the competition making it through to the second last round of competition (Round 6) this week. Whilst we lost to Warners Bay High School, all players competed admirably and we would like to congratulate Max, Connor, Toby and Lucas for representing MCS so well.
