Technology, Ally or Enemy
It is true that it is difficult to connect, communicate and live in 21st Century Australia without Technology. It is so powerful, helpful and convenient, allowing us to do so much more in a day. However, we often find that it is also a source of procrastination, time wasting and has negative impacts on our wellbeing. For many of us (parents) our children can navigate their way around technology so quickly and move around the screen so fast we’re not even sure what they’ve done!
For the parents reading this article, many of us, myself included are digital immigrants. Technology has come into our lives and we’ve been able to watch it from afar and learn how to best use it or have been able to get by without it. This is not the case for our children, the digital natives who have been born already swiping, pinching and panning their way around devices from birth. These are two different perspectives and mindsets! I believe we owe it to our children to do our best and to help them, to have open conversations with them about how they spend their time online, to talk to them about appropriate and safe behaviours and how to leverage technology for good.
Elevate Education has an upcoming parent webinar titled “How You Can Make Technology an Ally (& Not the Enemy!)”. They will cover as part of this session:
Technology addiction and how to reduce technology dependence
Practical strategies and apps to minimise procrastination
How to help your child use technology productively to enhance their learning
Tune in on Wednesday 16th August @ 6:30pm (AEST)

Chess News
On Monday August 7, the senior chess team travelled to Callaghan College Wallsend campus to compete in the 5th round of the NSWJCL (Junior Chess League). It was a tightly fought contest with the Board 1 match lasting well over 90 minutes. The result was a draw (two games all), however as a result needs to be determined on the day, the board 4 match does not count. Congratulations to the MCS team for their overall win, our players were:
Max (Yr 12), Lucas (Yr 7), Jack (Yr 10) and Dylan (Yr 10).
We now progress to Round 6 and should expect to play sometime in the next 3-4 weeks.
Well done team!

HSC Trial Exams
Next week our HSC Class of 2023 commence their Trial HSC Examinations. These exams represent the final formal HSC assessments for these students as they complete their final few weeks with us as students of MCS. We are so proud of them, their efforts and approach to schooling and wish them all the best as they complete these final assessments.
