Supporting Your Teen in a Digital World
Navigating the digital world as families can pose many challenges for parents. While it is easy to view the online world solely as a source of danger, it is also a space where our teenagers are learning to exercise wisdom, discernment, and integrity.
As parents and caregivers, our goal is not to isolate our teens from technology, but to shepherd them through it with open communication and love. When mistakes happen, and in a rapidly changing digital age, they often will, we have an opportunity to model Christ’s forgiveness and restoration. By setting healthy boundaries out of care rather than control, and by praying alongside our teens about their online interactions, we empower them to be positive lights in the digital world.
Here are 4 strategies that may help us navigate this world together with our teenagers (in next week's newsletter we will unpack the last 5 strategies).
1. Engage actively with your child’s online interests
Learn about their favourite apps and games.
Ask them to show you how their favourite games and apps work.
Join in when possible: Play a game together or chat about what they are watching.
Have regular check-ins.
Talk about their online experiences.
2. Encourage a healthy balance between online and offline activities
Encourage offline activities: Help your young person find hobbies, sports, or social events they enjoy.
Set screen-free times: Have times when no one at home is online, like at mealtimes or before bed.
Prioritise sleep: Encourage 8-10 hours of sleep each night and keep devices out of the bedroom.
3. Mentor rather than monitor
Talk about online habits: Ask questions and initiate discussions about your child’s experiences.
Share your own positive and negative experiences online.
Discuss safety together: Approach online changes and restrictions as something to navigate together, rather than something being imposed on them.
Model behaviour that you want to see: Young people are more likely to follow rules if they see you doing the same.
4. Help your child think carefully about online content
Encourage critical thinking: Discuss who created the content your child enjoys.
Promote fact-checking: Show them how to verify information using reliable sources.
Discuss the impact of misinformation: Talk about how false information can spread fast online and cause real-world problems, like unnecessary panic, influencing elections, or spreading harmful health myths.
Know that the Secondary Staff pray for your young people consistently as they learn to navigate the technological world in a Godly manner.
Japanese Visitors at MCS
Our students were blessed with the opportunity to expand their horizons recently, as 39 Japanese students from Ota Daiichi High School joined our classes as part of a cultural connection program. Our students were outstanding at welcoming and hosting our guests, guiding them around, explaining daily routines, and making sure everyone felt right at home. Despite the obvious language barriers, students from both countries found many ways to connect, share experiences, and build friendships.
We highly value the opportunity to partner with the staff and students from Ota Daiichi High School. Each year, our students look forward to welcoming them into our community, learning what life and learning is like in Japan as we share our space with them at MCS. It is a privilege for our community to share in this cultural exchange program. It challenges our students as they communicate, strengthens our culture as we learn about theirs, and helps us reflect our values as we share what God has blessed us with.
