We have had a busy time in the Primary Department this week. We began the week together on Monday morning with our Memory Verse Champions helping us remember this fortnight’s focus verse:

[Jesus said] "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." - John 6:35

We have also spent the week reviewing the process we need to follow when using the Peace making Pizza to help us work through conflict when it arises with the people around us. We were excited to identify that the way we can work toward a peaceful resolution in conflict is by

  1. Put God first

  2. Own my part

  3. Talk it over and

  4. Make it right.

An image of the Peacemaking Pizza is below and it would be very helpful if you could talk to your child about this process and how they can use it in all areas of their lives.

National Simultaneous Story Time

A great time was had by all the Primary classes on Wednesday as we joined in with the National Simultaneous Story Time. Students all over Australia stopped their usual class work around 11am and enjoyed the same story being read in every classroom, The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Yang and Heath McKenzie. It was lovely to have all our Primary students enjoy the same story and certainly facilitated some interesting conversations across several dinner tables in Medowie and our surrounding areas.

GRIP Leadership Conference

Our Year 6 Student Leaders had the opportunity to attend the Primary GRIP Leadership conference at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle this week. They were treated to a day of games, leadership teaching and mixing with student leaders from other schools where they were able to share ideas and hear how other student leaders were serving their schools. The Student Leaders were outstanding ambassadors for MCS and I was very proud of the way they engaged with the conference with enthusiasm, connected with Leaders from other schools and shared their ideas openly with those around them. I can’t wait to see how this event influences the ideas of our student leaders and the way in which they lead the Primary students.

Healthy Lunch Boxes

Our Primary students have very busy days at school for which they require lots of energy to learn and play. We ask that parents carefully plan the food that they send to school with their children. Fruit Break should consist of fresh fruit or vegetable sticks that can be easily managed by the students. We encourage healthy snacks for Recess such as fruit, yoghurt, vegetable sticks, hommus, crackers and muesli bars. Some great ideas for lunches could be sandwiches with cold meat and salad fillings, wraps and leftovers from dinner the night before. Sweet treats and processed foods that are high in salt and fat should be kept for special treats at home. For some ideas for different healthy school lunches please see the link below.

School Uniform

It is lovely to see all our Primary students wearing the MCS Winter Uniform with pride. This really helps our students feel part of MCS and helps prepare their minds and bodies for learning. An aspect of the school uniform that can often be overlooked is the MCS school bag. Just a reminder that as stated by the MCS Uniform Policy students are required to have the MCS monogrammed navy backpack. The old maroon backpacks are no longer a part of our school uniform. If your child is using a maroon backpack by choice and they own a navy backpack please make sure that they bring their navy backpack to school. If they do not have a navy backpack we request that you purchase them the current backpack, and that they begin using the correct backpack by the beginning of Term 3.

Primary Chapel and Assembly

Primary Chapel and Assembly take place on alternate Friday’s in the Lighthouse. Our start time has changed to 2:15pm, with an expected conclusion around 3:00pm. We warmly invite all our parents to join us for these events.

  • Chapel - odd weeks of the term (9-Jun, 23-Jun)

  • Assembly - even weeks of the term (2-Jun, 16-Jun)

I wish everyone a fun and restful weekend with your families.
