T2, Week 8

Sports Quote of the Week

I can only control my performance. If I do my best, then I can feel good at the end of the day” - Michael Phelps

What a week it has been at MCS. We held our first ever whole Primary Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 10th June and then decided to back it up with our Secondary Athletics Carnival on Thursday 11th June.

Athletics Carnival week is a special week in the life of a school. We get the anticipation of the students. There wasn’t a single occasion where I left the staffroom in the past week where I haven’t been stopped and asked a question around our carnival. We get to join together as a whole community and celebrate sport as we descend on Kindlebark Oval for a day of fun and friendly competition. And of course we get to learn lots of lessons from our efforts at the carnivals.

As a sporting community, we have been speaking into this idea that results aren’t the be all and end all. It is in the effort we put in where true success is met. This quote from Michael Phelps, one of the most decorated and successful swimmers of all time, reflects this idea. He knew that he could only control his performance and if he put in his best effort, he could sleep well. As some of us deal with not getting the results we might have desired, I want to remind us that it isn’t in wins and losses that see success, it is in the effort that we put in.

Primary Athletics Carnival!

Our Primary Athletics Carnival was a special event. It was so great to see so many of our Primary students show up and have a go at a number of different sporting events across the day. The participation rates were outstandingly high all day and the energy of the day was electric. I know that I went home pretty tired so I can only imagine how some of our students felt after competing in so many different track and field events.

I absolutely loved that our Infants students were able to come along and do their own versions of the different athletics events. Watching them try the high jump and leaping up onto that big mat was definitely a highlight for me!

A big thank you to so many from the community who came out to celebrate the day by watching and cheering from the side.

Secondary Athletics Carnival!

We followed the primary carnival with a little bit of rain overnight but not enough to dampen the spirits of our high schoolers. They showed up ready to compete and there were some fantastic efforts put in right from the start. Some records fell which was exciting but it was better to see so many of our student community show up and support their classmates and friends.

The relay race was my favourite event of the day with the mighty Eagles storming home for the win. We even got a cameo appearance from Mr Hallett and Mr Todd at the back end of the race to bring our runners home.

Equestrian Student Achievement

This week we are celebrating Clementine’s recent achievements from the June long weekend at the Vaulting NSW State Championships which were held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Clementine represented the Hunter Valley Vaulting Team, and competed in four events:

  • Preliminary  Barrel - Placed 1st

  • Par De Deux Barrel - Placed 1st

  • Squad Barrel - Placed 3rd

  • Preliminary Compulsory & Freestyle - Horse - Placed 4th. This was a tight competition with 0.297 between 1st to 5th place.

Clementine has had an amazing competition, with some sensational individual and team results. She kicked some personal goals and we are very proud of her. Vaulting NSW falls under Equestrian NSW / Australia and Clementine will be competing at the upcoming Interschool State Championships in the upcoming July school holidays, representing the Medowie Christian School Equestrian Team.

Congratulations Clementine on your incredible achievement. We look forward to hearing more following your upcoming State Championships.
