Habits of Mind

As part of our Pastoral Care Program here at MCS students have the opportunity to be able to engage with what we call ‘Friday Reflections’. This initiative aims to afford our students some time in Care Groups to stop and reflect on their week as a learner, to consider what they have accomplished, what is still ahead of them and what strategies they could use to grow and progress at school.

This work is based on Costa and Kalick’s research and is called The Habits of Mind. This framework for thinking is as essential now as when it was first introduced over 30 years ago. When we commit to growing the habits both individually and as a community, we become more thoughtful, responsive, and innovative. Over the years during many social, political, scientific, and economic changes, the 16 Habits of Mind still stand and the application in practice has grown our thinking.

MCS Careers Panel

This week our Senior Secondary students from Year 9 - 12 had the opportunity to listen and learn a little more about the world of work from a variety of perspectives at our Careers Panel. Our thanks to Mrs Billett for her continued leadership in helping our young men and women explore the workplace more thoughtfully at MCS. If you’d like more information, MCS has our own Careers website which might be helpful conversation starters at home: MCS Careers

Some great news!

As our Year 12 students commence their final 2 weeks as students at MCS, this week we have learned that 3 students; Elouise, Connor and Ashleigh have already received early offers to attend the University of Newcastle in 2024. We are so proud of all of our Year 12 students and want to celebrate with them their success in achieving acceptance into the courses of their choosing before the exams commence. More celebrations to come as we celebrate Year 12’s Graduation Assembly on Wednesday 20th Sept and Formal on the evening of 21st Sept at the end of the term.

Another opportunity to Elevate!

We’re excited to announce that Elevate Education will be hosting a free webinar for our parents.

Elevate Education works with our students, delivering high impact workshops on study skills, motivation, wellbeing, and exam preparation. By tuning into their webinar series you will learn how you can help better support your children at home through reinforcing the skills they learn at school. Their upcoming parent webinar is titled “How You Can Support Your Child During Exams”. They will cover as part of this session:

  • What to do in the final days before any test or assessment

  • How to establish a good routine for the night before

  • How to optimise exam-room performance

Tune in on Wednesday 13th September @ 6:30pm (AEST)
