Celebrating Semester One

This week the Secondary Community met to celebrate the first half of 2023. What a wonderful semester of learning we have shared together both inside and out of the classroom. In our Assembly this week, we celebrated by acknowledging students in two award categories:

  • Academic Achievement - acknowledging our learners in the classroom and

  • Contribution to Culture - recognising students who exemplify our values and help make MCS the best place to learn and grow.

During our time together I played a short clip from speaker, trainer and thought leader Jim Kwik ‘Believe in Yourself’, I have included it here for any of our students or families that may like to view this again. It is only 6 minutes long and packed full of great mindset strategy. My favourite quote in this clip on a professional and personal level (as I find this both encouraging and challenging) is this:

“If you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them” - Jim Kwik

In this video, Kwik is outlining that for all of us, if we continually tell ourselves that we can’t do something because we are “not smart”, or “don’t have the talent or capacity” to do something, that eventually, we’ll believe these messages we tell ourselves. We essentially fight for our limits and as a result of the time we spend thinking in this way, get to keep these limits.

Here at MCS we want to encourage students to have a go, to be courageous in their learning, to feed into this community positively and to grow bigger than what they think their limits are. I encourage all our families to have a watch and a conversation with your child about what limits they might be fighting for and which of these might be worth forgetting.

Secondary Reports

Next Week our Year 7 - 10 reports will be published to the Parent Portal on Sentral. Our teaching team has invested time and thought into the development of your child’s report aiming to afford helpful information and insights on learning this semester. With our teacher comments we like to focus on THREE key areas.

  • Areas of Strength: what is your child doing in the classroom that leads to success.

  • Areas of Growth: where are the opportunities for improvement.

  • Next Steps in Learning: where we aim to provide actionable strategies for what your child can do to grow and improve in any given course.

We hope you find these reports helpful in understanding where your child is at currently on their learning journey and how you might be able to support and encourage their growth as learners at MCS.

Uniform Support

We have a great uniform here at MCS and for many of our students it is worn as designed and with pride. With the cold winter weather we do acknowledge that sometimes additional layers are desired. If this is the case students are able to wear a plain shirt or jumper underneath their school uniform. This must not be visible during the school day and as a result no hoodies are allowed to be worn as a part of our uniform.

Thank you for supporting us to maintain our uniform standards and approach to learning, and building relationships with your children.
