Our Culture of Learning - The Power of Reflection
As a teaching and leadership team we are often looking back on lessons delivered or changes made and evaluating their effectiveness in moving us towards our goals. The skill of reflecting and evaluating our progress helps us to consolidate our learning, to see new connections and to gain an accurate understanding of what we’ve achieved and how far we’ve come.
At MCS we believe this is a critical skill for our young men and women to learn and have intentionally designed an opportunity into our Pastoral Care Program which we call Friday Reflections.
This initiative encourages learners to take some time at the end of the week to stop and reflect on how they are going academically, organisationally and emotionally with their work. During these times students are able to use one of the diary or journaling tools here to take a moment to consider where they are with their Maths, where there are opportunities for growth in English and how they are managing their time around that Science project. The aim is to help our learning community become more aware of what they’re doing, how they are applying themselves, and identifying what they could change in order to increase their capacity as learners.
As families we can get so busy, racing from one activity to the next and in doing this miss opportunities to lead our children in meaningful reflection on their learning. Below are just a few prompts that might be helpful for you to learn more about what’s happening in your child’s learning journey and as a result engage them in reflection around their own learning.

Open-ended questions that are a little different to the norm will help promote higher quality reflection and engagement with the learning process for your child and help build their learning power.
So Grateful for our Student Leaders
This week our Secondary Student Leaders have taken hold of 2 key opportunities to represent our school and build our culture. I would like to take a moment to thank Amity, Emily, Hannah, Ashleigh and Connor for getting along to the School Leaders Morning Tea held by Kate Washington and for giving back to our school community leading visitor tours at our first Principal’s Tour for 2023. Our visiting families were so impressed with you all, your knowledge and heart for MCS and we are blessed to have you as our Leadership Team for 2023.

Mr. Weeks
