T3, Week 2

Stage 3 Bathurst Camp

This week Stage 3 headed out on a huge adventure to Bathurst in order to learn all about the Australian Gold Rush and other aspects of the history of the early Australian settlement. Following a very early morning we all set off on some coaches with our first stop being The Drip at Gulgong. At this location we were treated to a presentation about the life of First Nations people in the area over history. The students took part in the process of ochre painting on natural objects that they found on country and then they placed these objects in a meeting circle to show that they had been part of the country in that area. They learned to weave using natural reeds and were treated to a bush walk in the beautiful National Park where they were able to enjoy the special rock formations and crystal clear Goulburn River. The rocks above dripped lovely clear water on our faces that made everyone smile.

Following this we headed on to Bathurst where we stayed at Bathurst Gold Fields Resort. The students then spent the evening being entertained by bush tales and dancing around a warm campfire. The following day our students explored life in the Gold Rush by participating in learning experiences such as gold panning, baking damper on a fire, creating mud bricks, playing old fashioned games, watching steam engines and exploring a Gold Rush museum. We explored life in the early Bathurst settlement through role play at Bathurst Peace Park and then investigated what life was like in early Bathurst by visiting the Court House Museum and interacting with the artefacts. A great time was had by all and we have all developed a greater appreciation for the people who lived through this amazing period of History.

Celebrating Year 1 Learning

As Term 3 begins the Year 1 children have enjoyed our Athletics program and are now beginning gymnastic lessons. We have trained instructors joining us each week to teach the children basic gymnastic games and skills. Year 1 was also introduced to our Integrated studies topic for this term, ‘Changing Materials’. A lot of hands-on experiences will be provided that allow the children to explore the property of materials. This week we have enjoyed looking at the skills needed to complete an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island inspired artwork and 1JW were very appreciative to have Mrs Price share her family’s skills and cultural knowledge. The NAIDOC assembly on Friday is something we are looking forward to.

Book Week and Book Fair

Book Week is coming! Book Week will be held this term from the 18th to the 22nd of August (Week 4). The theme of this year’s Book Week is Book an Adventure! The week will be filled with activities and challenges designed to instill your child with an excitement for reading and storytelling.

Our annual Book Fair will be held during Book Week and will be hosted by Scholastic. All money raised will go to purchasing more books for the school library. All students will be given a chance to shop at the book fair during school hours.

During Monday and Tuesday, students will be able to preview the Book Fair and create a wishlist. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will be given time during class and at lunch to make purchases from the Book Fair. Some of our prep students will be able to shop the Book Fair on Tuesday, as they will not be at school later in the week. The Book Fair will be open for parents on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 8.30 - 8.50 and on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.10 - 3.45. The Book Fair will also be open after the costume parade on Friday morning.

There are several payment options available for the book fair. Students and parents may use cash, EFTPOS, or prepay online. To prepay online use the back of the wishlist and present this wishlist with the receipt number and the amount paid filled out. The receipt number and amount paid must be presented as proof of payment.

Book Parade and Grandparents Day

To cap off our week of fun, we will be having our Book Parade on Friday the 22nd of August. This will take place from 9.30 - 10.30am in the Lighthouse. Primary students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character and parents are welcome to watch the procession.

As an added joy, the final day of Book Week and our Book Parade will coincide with Grandparents Day. All grandparents are warmly invited to attend the parade, visit the Book Fair, enjoy Morning Tea and continue on to our Primary open classrooms. Grandparents Day will run from 9:30am - 12pm.

Costume Guidelines

We love the creativity and passion of our students, but will ask you to keep a couple things in mind when choosing a costume. Book Week is a celebration of books, not movies or television. We would like children to carry a copy of the book they took inspiration from during the parade to help show the idea behind their costume and to celebrate their favourite books.

Our Book Parade is an expression of our love of literature and is not a competition. There will be no prizes awarded for the Book Parade.

When choosing a costume please select one which is age, community and theme appropriate. The normal rules for out-of-uniform days apply. If you are unsure about a costume or if you have any further questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Any student who does not wish to dress-up may come to school in their regular uniform.

Normal library lessons will not be held during Week 4, but will resume in Week 5.

I wish everyone a restful weekend with their families.
